About Stevens Institute of Technology

Stevens Institute of Technology is a private technological university in Hoboken, New Jersey, on Castle Point overlooking the Hudson River and Manhattan. It was founded in 1870 from the bequest of Edwin A. Stevens and is among the older dedicated engineering institutes in the United States. The campus is a compact urban site, and its historic identity is mechanical engineering and naval architecture rather than a land-grant farm.

Units include the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science, the School of Systems and Enterprises, the School of Business, and a school of humanities, arts and social sciences. Graduate concentrations include mechanical and ocean engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, systems engineering, and financial engineering. The Davidson Laboratory supports marine and naval hydrodynamics. Proximity to New York finance and ports shapes applied projects.

Enrollment is about 8,000 to 9,000, with graduate students a large share, many in professional master's programs, and a sizable international cohort. Alumni include scientific-management theorist Frederick Winslow Taylor, physicist and Nobel laureate Frederick Reines, and sculptor Alexander Calder.

Graduate degrees are mainly the M.S. and M.Eng., with Ph.D. programs in engineering and science and an M.B.A. Coursework-heavy professional master's can be taken in the evening by students working in New York; doctoral study is laboratory-based. The calendar is semester-based. Research assistants receive stipends; many master's students are employer- or self-funded. Daily life is Hoboken and PATH-train commuting into Manhattan.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Stevens Institute of Technology lists 77 graduate programs across 27 subjects: 51 master's programs and 22 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in civil engineering, computer science and business & management.
