About University of Arizona

The University of Arizona is Arizona's land-grant flagship, founded in Tucson in 1885 before statehood. It grew from a territorial school of agriculture and mines into a public research university with a main campus north of downtown Tucson and health-sciences sites in Tucson and Phoenix. Agricultural extension, optical and planetary science, and statewide medical education remain core public missions.

Academics sit in more than a dozen colleges, including Science, Engineering, Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Eller College of Management, Law, and Medicine. Graduate research is tied to the Wyant College of Optical Sciences, Steward Observatory, the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, the BIO5 Institute, and University of Arizona Health Sciences. Biosphere 2, north of Tucson, is used in earth-systems graduate training.

About 50,000 students enroll, of whom roughly 10,000 are in graduate or professional programs. International students number in the several thousands and come from more than 100 countries. Faculty number about 3,000. Notable alumni include Interior Secretary Stewart Udall, actor Garry Shandling, and journalist Geraldo Rivera.
