Graduate Programs in the United States

The US leads the world with 60+ universities in the Grad School Navigator top 200, including 30+ in the top 50. The UK has 25+ in the same top 200, showing the breadth of US options beyond its most famous institutions.

The US is known for world-leading universities such as the Ivy League schools (including Harvard, Yale and Princeton), Stanford and MIT. Its strength extends well beyond those names: public research universities such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and the University of California campuses offer outstanding options across subjects. Boston, New York and Los Angeles provide major-city settings, while Ann Arbor, Madison and Urbana-Champaign offer a college-town experience centered on university life.

US master's degrees offer both professional training and preparation for research, often with room to combine electives across departments. Doctoral programs commonly combine coursework with research, and many accept applicants directly from a bachelor's degree.

Median annual tuition among master's programs, according to our data, is about US$39,300. Many applicants weigh this investment against the US's strength in technology, finance, biotechnology and other major industries, with opportunities for high-paying careers. University scholarships can substantially reduce costs and are worth exploring alongside each program. Funded PhD offers commonly combine tuition support with a stipend through teaching or research assistantships.

The US offers post-study work through Optional Practical Training (OPT). Eligible F-1 student visa holders can receive up to 12 months of work authorization related to their degree, with a further 24 months for qualifying science, technology, engineering and mathematics degrees and eligible employers. Employer-sponsored routes such as H-1B can support a longer-term career, subject to eligibility and, where applicable, annual selection. These paths give graduates a way to build experience with US employers, particularly in technical fields.
