Graduate Programs in the United Kingdom

6,000+ graduate programs at 50+ universities

Overview

The UK ranks second worldwide for the number of universities in the Grad School Navigator top 200, behind only the US. It has 25+ universities in the top 200, including 6 in the top 50. Oxford ranks #5 and Cambridge #7.

The UK is well known for Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge), the G5 and the Russell Group. The G5 adds Imperial College London, University College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science to Oxbridge. The wider Russell Group spans 24 research-intensive universities, giving applicants a much broader choice beyond those five names. Members include Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Nottingham, alongside smaller university-city settings such as Durham and York.

One-year master's courses are a distinctive UK option: according to our data, 46% of master's programs take one year or less. Taught courses can deepen an existing specialism, while conversion courses help graduates change subjects. Research degrees instead center on an independent project.

Median annual tuition among master's programs, according to our data, is about US$38,100 in the UK, compared with US$39,300 in the US. However, many UK courses are shorter, which can substantially reduce both out-of-pocket expenses and the opportunity cost of time away from work.

The UK is popular with international students because of its Graduate visa program. Eligible graduates can stay to find work without first securing a job offer or employer sponsorship. The visa lasts two years for applications through December 2026, 18 months from January 2027, or three years for doctoral graduates.
